Stephen the Great

# Sergiu Cătărau – The Artist Who Gave Wood a New Life Sometimes, the most exquisite works of art are born from simple, yet deeply meaningful moments. The story of painter Sergiu Cătărau and the icon depicting Saint Stephen the Great is one of patience, faith, talent, and the power to perceive beauty where others no longer see it. It all began on a street in Frankfurt, where Sergiu Cătărau came across an abandoned wooden board. To some, it might have been merely a piece of old, worthless material. To the artist, however, the wood concealed a story and the potential for a new creation. With care and meticulous craftsmanship, Sergiu stripped away the old layers of varnish, cleaned and sanded the wood, preparing it for a renewed existence. Through his skill and artistic sensibility, he transformed an overlooked piece of wood into the canvas for a work of profound spiritual resonance: an icon of Saint Stephen the Great.
